08.04.2014Roundtable meeting of the Minister of Education and Science with medical students and health workers of Roma origin on the occasion of April 8th - International Roma Day

“Your mission is Enlightenment - to keep and care for the health of all your friends, colleagues and members of your community", said Education Minister Prof. Klisarova to the medical students of Roma origin, on the occasion of World Health Day and professional holiday of the people working in health.

On the occasion of International Roma Day on April 8th the Ministry of Education and Science and Center Amalipe held a Round Table "My path to the University". Roma students studying in medical colleges and universities across the country, as well as health professionals of Roma background participated in the event. They shared their personal stories on their process of education in university in this difficult but noble profession.

In her address to the students Prof. Klisarova said that the community can sometimes be suspicious towards doctors, especially if it is a case of a child, but if Roma medical personnel is side by side with other doctors, the community has much greater confidence, according to the Minister. "I am convinced that you not only as doctors who heal children and adults, and people who turn to you for help, you will prove to these children that if they stay in school, they will succeed, so that we have as little as possible Roma drop-outs in the educational system, or even none at all", added the Minister Klisarova in her address. “You being the good example will be not only doctors and healers but educators - our connection to the hearts and souls of all people from the Roma community", she said.

The students and all participants in the meeting congratulated Minister Klisarova and Maria Fartunova - Director of "Higher Education" Directorate in the Ministry of Education and Science with the Roma anthem "Dzhelem Dzhelem" and a poem by the Roma poet Usim Kerim - "I’m a Gypsy".

Also a major topic of the meeting was the program that supports Roma students in medical universities and colleges (Roma Health Scholarship Program) which is implemented in Bulgaria since 2009 with the support of the "Open Society" Institute and the Roma Education Fund. Since 2014/15 it will be financed by Ministry of Health within the Norvegian Financial Mechanism. During the meeting, moderated by Dr. Joseph Nunev expert at the Ministry of Education, students from medical universities in the country and health mediators shared their personal stories about the difficulties they have encountered in their way to university, studying medical disciplines. As the young people remembered the difficulties, they also remember the given hand and help from people who guided them, supported and inspired them to continue to fight for their dreams.

The round table was held on April 7th , Monday at the premises of the Centre for Educational Integration of Children and Pupils from Ethnic Minorities.
