11.02.2016Center Amalipe supported four students from the municipality of Pavlikeni

CIDT "Amalipe" supported four students from Municipality of Pavlikeni, by paying the fees for their training at the University of Veliko Tarnovo "St. St. Cyril and Methodius ". The funds are allocated under the project "Provision of services for participation in the study of Roma integration at local level in Pavlikeni Municipality" funded within the program LERI (Local Initiatives for Roma empowerment) of the EU Fundamental Rights Agency (FRA).

Financial assistance in the amount of one  fee for the second semester of academic year 2015/2016 for training in the University of Veliko Tarnovo "St. St. Cyril and Methodius" was given to the following students:
1.Stefan Severinov Stefanov - specialty "History and presence of EU -European Integration" Master degree, 1st year
2.Valentin Samuilov Vasilev - specialty "Social pedagogy", 4th year
3.Yordanka Kirilova Dimitrova - specialty "Preschool and Primary School Education, 2nd year
4.Lyuben Venelinov Lyubenov - specialty "Social entrepreneurship", 1st year

The students are required to participate in initiatives and campaigns of Center "Amalipe" and the Center for Community Development - Pavlikeni to activate the local Roma community. Their first initiative is the establishment of a volunteer group to support the activities on:
- motivating Roma young people to apply in universities: the aim is rapid increase of the number of Roma students from municipality of Pavlikeni;
- working with Roma parents to support their children who wish to apply to university;
- doing advocacy to Pavlikeni Municipality to create a municipal fund to support students

In a conversation with the leadership of Center "Amalipe" students shared their satisfaction that during the last 4 or 5 years there has been a positive change in the educational level of Roma people. Untill recently, the municipality had only two Roma with higher education, many children were dropping out of school before finishing eighth grade, the percentage of Roma secondary school was very low. Today, cases of dropouts before completing primary education are exceptions, over 60% of Roma youths are studying in secondary schools and there are 6 students (some of thrm are scholars to the Roma Education Fund). We will reach the level of Byala Slatina and Knezha , where there are dozens of students promised the youngsters of Pavlikeni.

LERI (Local Engagement for Roma Inclusion) is a qualitative action research project implemented by the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA) as part of its multi-annual Roma Programme.The project aims to bring together local stakeholders, including Roma, in joint efforts to better understand the mechanisms and dynamics of Roma inclusion at local level. Through this process of engagement, the research investigates how local authorities and residents can best be involved in Roma integration actions, and to identify which aspects of these actions work, which do not, and why. The activities implemented in Pavlikeni are contributing to the research and data collection conducted by FRA under the LERI project.
