21.02.2018Amalipe Center became a partner in the national campaign to prevent human trafficking for labour exploatation

The National Commission for Combating Human Trafficking reminds you: Be careful when going abroad for work.

The National Commission for Combating Human Trafficking launches the annual National campaign for human trafficking for labor exploitation prevention, which is supported by the British Embassy in Sofia in partnership with Center for Interethnic Dialog and Tolerance Amalipe.

Various events and initiatives are planned within the campaign this year, including info meetings with students, representatives of vulnerable groups, with the assistance of the Center for Interethnic Dialog and Tolerance Amalipe, together with the Local Commissions for Combating Human Trafficking in the cities of Bourgas, Varna, Veliko Tarnovo and Sliven, and the volunteers in them. "The purpose of the info meetings is to warn students that generous promises for quick money abroad can be a trap. On the other hand, from these discussions  we, the professionals, will understand what students know and expect from their travels abroad, and we will encourage them to give ideas for informational materials that speak their language and will work in their community. " Mrs. Kamelia Dimitrova, secretary of the National Commission for Combating Human Trafficking, on the occasion of the forthcoming initiatives.

The campaign also includes events with all ten Local Commissions of Regional Labour Offices, in partnership with the Employment Agency, as well as a round table on the topic of human  trafficking for labour exploitation, on which will be discussed good practices for prevention as well as cases of Bulgarian citizens who have been victims of human trafficking for labor exploitation in the countries of Western Europe, with an emphasis on the cases in the United Kingdom.

The campaign starts today with informational sessions in Sliven and Veliko Tarnovo. The informational session in Veliko Turnovo will be preceded by a partners meeting of the UK Embassy, the Local Commission for Combating  Human Trafficking in Veliko Tarnovo and Center for Interethnic Dialogue and Tolerance "Amalipe". It will be hosted by Mr. Gancho Karabadjakov, Deputy Mayor of  Municipality of Veliko Tarnovo and a Chair of the Local Commission. The meeting will be attended by H.E. Emma Hopkins, Ambassador of Great Britain in Bulgaria, Mrs. Vania Ananieva, Secretary of the Local Commissions for Combating Human Trafficking in Veliko Tarnovo, Mr. Deyan Kolev, Chairman of Center Amalipe , Volunteers and Students, participants in the first focus group in the city.

In the light of the campaign launch, the National Commission for Combating  Human Trafficking urges you to be extremely careful when you accept work outside Bulgaria. In the recent years, more and more businesses in smaller villages in the country are hiring people, promising to send them abroad for seasonal or temporary work. Thus, the unfair employers override the regulatory mechanisms that protect seasonal workers, and persuade jobseekers that there is no risk for them.

People that are seeking permanent or seasonal job abroad are often deceived. Preliminary arrangements and promises by the employers differ dramatically from the real living and working conditions. People work for a minimum wage, and in some cases they even do not get one, their identity documents are taken away by an employer or a third person, they are forced to pay unregulated fees for the so-called job offer. Often people don’t start work immediately  and are forced to wait until their personal funds end up and they owe the employer, who makes them pay additional costs.

Inform yourself thoroughly of each step before making a final decision to go abroad for work.

You must sign a contract in advance to regulate the conditions of employment and the time you are employed. You should receive a copy of the contract in Bulgarian (or in a language you understand) as well as in the official language for the country of the employer. Do not provide your identity documents to anyone, under any conditions.

Contact one of the organizations that provide information about safe travel and working abroad to help you with information, advice or check your intermediary. Find contacts of organizations in the foreign country that you could contact in case of doubts and concerns about your work.

Find more about  the agency you are leaving with, as well as the company or employer you are going to. You can find a list of licensed employment agencies on the Employment Agency's website: https: //www.az.government.bg/intermediaries/

Inform yourself about the legislations, the residence regime and work regime for Bulgarian citizens in the country you are leaving for. You can get more information on labor migration from the Labor and Social Affairs Departments of the Ministry of Labour and Social Policies  in the diplomatic representations of the Republic of Bulgaria in the European countries with the largest Bulgarian communities: http: //www.mlsp.government.bg/index. php? section = POLICIESI & I = 266

If you are abroad and you are in trouble, immediately contact the Bulgarian embassy  in the  country you are at. Get help from the police even if you have no documents. You are  victim of a serious crime and the police will help you.

We urge you to be cautious!
