More than 40 lawyers from Northern and Central Bulgaria participated in training on basic human rights and protection against discrimination in the period of 12-14 May in Sliven, organized by Amalipe Center.

The main objective of the seminar was to familiarize and discuss main European directives, such as the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union and to improve the implementation of Decision 2008/913 / EU on combating certain forms and manifestations of racism and xenophobia through criminal law.

The training was organized by Amalipe Center, Veliko Tarnovo, Roma Center for Social Intervention and Studies - Romani CRISS and National Institute for Lawyers’ Preparation and Training INPPA, Bucharest, as partners in the project "Advancing knowledge on fundamental rights for lawyers ".

The training aimed to provide new ways and means for the implementation of the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union and to assist lawyers in Bulgaria to apply these provisions in national legislation and to take more cases of protection against discrimination before National and European Courts.

During the seminar the participants were acquainted with the structure and the normative - legal framework of the Commission for Protection against Discrimination. Lalo Kamenov, a representative of the Commission, pointed out the main types of discrimination and selected practices of discrimination by ethnicity.

The sessions for the specifics of the Roma groups in Bulgaria and the prevention of early marriages, presented by Deyan Kolev and Teodora Krumova from Amalipe Center, were of particular interest to the participants.

On the last day of the training, Dilyana Giteva, an expert on international and European law, familiarised the participants with European legislation on protection against discrimination and discussed with the present various cases of legal exceptions.

The seminar ended with satisfaction, exchange of experience and new ideas for future collaborations.
