21.08.2017For the terrorist attack in Catalonia: analysis by Professor Tatiana Dronzina

The analyses of some terrorist experts on the attacks in Catalonia have raised strong doubts even in observers, who were not aware of the Ispanish reality. Obviously, most of the "terrorist analysts" follow the rather problematic phrase of the otherwise brilliant philosopher Hegel: "As soon as the facts contradict my theory, the worse the facts"

For years Center Amalipe has been working in partnership with the Roma organization of Barcelona, Drrom Kotar Mestipen. For years we have been working with Professor Tatiana Dronzina, who for years taught in Spain and was a consultant to the local authorities in Catalonia on the occasion of jihadist radicalism.

Below we publish an analysis by Professor Dronzina about the terrorist group that has organized the series of attacks in recent days. This material, which is based on empirical facts promulgated by the Spanish press, gives a clear picture of what is happening there and provokes many questions about how to avoid such a situation...

Who formed the terrorist group, that attacked Catalonia?

The group is set up in Ripol, a town with 11,000 inhabitants, located at the foot of the Catalan Pyrenees. Having nothing exceptional, but a monastery, which is a historical monument. It is a village with a developed industrial profile and construction. Ten percent of the population are immigrants, and half of immigrants - Muslims. There is no ghetto in that town, foreigners are mixed with the local population.

What is the terrorist group that organized the attacks in Catalonia? According to the Catalan police, it consists of 12 people, at least 6 of whom are brothers and all are related to friendly ties. In addition, they share one nationality - Moroccans, and age - from 17 to 34 years. Of these 7 were killed, 4 were detained and one escaped. It is believed that the basis of radicalization is the local Imam.

The group consists of

Imam Es Satti, 40, lives in a modest one-bedroom apartment that costs him 150 euros per month. He heads the new mosque, created a year ago, due to problems with the old one, created in 2008. He was in prison for drug trafficking for four years. He leaves prison in 2012. Police sources say he had friendly ties with some of the detainees because of the 2004 Atocha terrorist attack. However, these are suggestions, as the search in his lodgings did not lead to anything. That is why his role is to be clarified both in the radicalization of the youth and in the logistic preparation of the attack.

The five killed in Cambrils

Moussa Oukabir, a 17-year-old Moroccan, born in Ripol, and without a police record, murdered. Well-known to the employees of the municipality, on the day of the attack, one of the officers accompanied his sister to the hospital for consultations during pregnancy. The young woman says she is a Catalan. The young person visits the integration center, has the support of local staff and a place to prepare his homework.

Driss Oukabir, 28, his brother, surrendered to the police, detained. Born in Morocco.

Said Aallaa, a Moroccan 19-year-old, born in Morocco, lives in Rippol without a police file. Described by his neighbors as very affectionate. Works at one of the popular restaurants in the area. After a call from a friend, he explains to his parents that he is coming out and never returns again. His employer described him as a very hardworking and normal boy.

Omar and Mohamed Hychami - brothers, 21 and 24 years old. Their father told them he was shocked and did not know who broke his son's brain. One of the brothers works in Conforza, the other is a welder. Born in Morocco. Student pupils in Spain. Mohammed is one of the most disciplined workers of Komforta, a metal casting enterprise. Very educated, he often reads namaz  but is angry when you talk to him about religion. His employers consider him so responsible that at the beginning of the summer they ask him to postpone his leave to complete an order and he accepts.

Houssaine Abouyaaqoub - Moroccan, 19 years old. Born in Morocco. He plays football in the youth team at his settlement in Catalonia, a town 24 kilometers from Ripol. Parents of his teammates emphasize his courtesy and modesty, but a little silent.

Two were killed in the Alcanar blast

 Four detained by the police

Driss Oubakir - brother of the Cambrils murdered Musa, 28, detained in Ripol. He turned to the police and announced that his younger brother had stolen his papers. Detained. There's a police file on sexual abuse.

Sahal el Karib - 34 years old, detained in Ripol. He has connections with Driss Oubakir. After his detention, his wife, who had a son two and a half years ago, said he had no connection with the attacks, but only knew Driss because he had sold him a ticket to Morocco. Owner of the locator in the city. He has lived in Ripol for four years.

Mohamed Aallaa - 27-year-old, detained in Ripol, the brother of Cambridge's murdered Said Aallaa. He is arrested because he owns the car, audi, with which the five murdered terrorists attacked Cambrils.

Mohamed Houli Chemlal, 20, from Melia, injured in the explosion at Akanar and detained after it. Friend of Musa. Maybe he helped him hire the van that was the assassin. Maybe he's in kinship with some of the terrorists. He was also called to work in the metal casting firm but refused, because his grandmother was ill and had to travel to Morocco. In the words of his fellow citizens, he was actually in the town.

Almost all young people are covered by the public education system in Spain, and are very rarely seen visiting the local mosque. There are two mosques, it is supposed that the imam of the newer one is the basis of the radicalization of young people, although they are rarely seen to visit it. The neighbors know this group well and are very surprised at what happened. They emphasize its normality, the efforts of young people to find a place on the labor market, to visit the center opened by the Catalonian government, where job placement or training courses are given. They communicate with local youth and look fully integrated. Obviously, the process of radicalization in them has gone very fast. Many locals are displeased with the benefits they receive - for example, all live in municipal housing where rents are minimal.

My main lessons are:

1. Not only Muslims from the ghettos can be radicalized - at least the Spanish case is not that

2. These are men between the ages of 17 and 34, of whom only one was born in Spain, but all worked in the country. Among them there are no unemployed or uneducated.

3. None of them is a refugee.

4. The assassins not only had access to social services but also benefited from many of them

5. None of the assassins have a police record of terrorism, although some of them are known to the police due to other violations of law

6. The process of radicalization has taken place quickly and unobtrusively for the community
