15.07.2016European recognition on the Together we are better Campaign

In the report "Evaluation of the implementation of the EU framework for Roma integration and recommendations of the European Council on effective measures for Roma integration of Member States", published on 27th June, the European Commission presents as a successful approach to combating anti- Roma stereotypes the campaign "Together we are better ..." organized by Center "Amalipe" and dozens of schools and community groups under the patronage of Vice President Popova.

The report states: "The campaign "Together we are better" in 2015 was initiated by the Centre "Amalipe" and include schools, community centers and youth groups as a peaceful response to the growing anti-Roma rhetoric and protests in Bulgaria. The campaign aimed to include both Roma and non-Roma in joint activities in support of local schools to prevent ethnic tensions, strengthening dialogue and promoting tolerance and solidarity, in order to avoid future conflicts. The campaign included over 80 public events in more than 40 municipalities and gathered about 3600 people. It was supported by the national and international political figures and diplomats. The campaign was supported by many ethnic Bulgarians, teachers, directors, artists and many others who publicly spoke out to promote tolerance and solidarity among ethnic groups. "(P. 24; the report is available on http://ec.europa.eu /justice/discrimination/files/roma-report-2016_en.pdf)

The campaign "Together we are better" is one of the 65 successful practices by all Member States, presented in the report. Ten of these practices come from Bulgaria, as Amalipe participate in two of them - the program to support Roma studying in medical universities and international project "Early marriages - culture or abuse"

The campaign "Together we are better" was initiated in early July 2015 in response to conflicts in Garmen and Orlandovtsi and rising ethnic tensions. In July, and in the coming months, dozens of schools have organized volunteer actions that brought together Bulgarians and Roma, ordinary citizens, politicians and public figures. Thus they showed that the things that unite us are many, and the school is a key factor for dialogue and tolerance - at local and national level.

The campaign was supported by Vice President Margarita Popova. The ambassadors of South Africa, the Netherlands, Norway, Britain, Poland, Germany, Belgium, renowned journalists (such Boyko Vassilev and others), dozens of local public figures also participated in it.
