28.06.2012International Anti-drug Day sparked an anti-AIDS campaign in Veliko Tarnovo

On the occasion of International Anti-drug Day volunteersfrom K7 Club decided to organize a campaign in front of Veliko Tarnovo Municipality. Volunteers handed out to passerby’s condoms and health education materials and explaining the harms of drugs.
Nowadays many young people have used drugs, while others probably are going to try. This desire comes from the desire of young people to copy their peers or television characters who lead irresponsible lives. Many people living with HIV are intravenous drug users in particular. HIV is most concentrated in the blood and the use of shared needles and syringes makes risk of transmission of virus huge. The use of soft drugs such as alcohol and "weed" can also put young people at risk. Even when using those when no blood is involved, they can cause risky behavior among people. Risky behavior such as unprotected sex with strangers can lead to infection not only with other sexually transmitted infections, but also with HIV.

We need more often to talk to young people about drug use and the consequences of it. In the early stage of drug use may don’t realize the damage it causes, and once that realization happens, people find it very difficult to quit. Every young man is fighting to become independent. They think that smoking "weed" makes them look older, and they don’t have to comply with anyone. Drugs create dependency, so in no way a person can be independent if he is using them.
Young people may need more role models to follow. Young people copy the behavior of their peers to be able to merge with the society and not to be rejected. If more young people pretend to have responsible lifestyle without drugs, then many of their peers will follow namely their behavior as a role model.
The volunteers from Club K7 see the problem this way and at every chance they go out on the street or in the park, organized a team of young, smiling, friendly people and meet their peers to show them what kind of lifestyle they have chosen and why they considered that their behavior is worthy to follow.

Every year on June 26, countries commemorate the International Anti-drug Day with a slogan determined by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime UNODC.

On this day different countries express their present challenges in the field of narcotics, measures taken and the solutions for resolving this problem. This day is a universal symbol which reminds the consequences of cultivation, trafficking and consumption of drugs and requires governments' firm resolve for an all-out campaign against this grave social problem.

Based on the estimates declared by the UN, presently there are over 200 million addicts who consume different types of narcotics including opium, heroin, marijuana and so on. What is more worrying is the decrease in the age of drug consumers, its spread among the youth and teenagers and the ever-increasing tendency towards consuming industrial drugs. Figures show that the average consumption of these substances has increased in different countries and the drug mafia networks have aimed at producing new drug combinations. Every day we witness production of a new combination of narcotics with volatile chemicals entering market under false names as hallucinatory drugs. Some of these hallucinatory drugs are much more dangerous than the traditional drugs and they cause grave problems; hence making the treatment much more difficult. The drugs mafias embark on distributing these substances claiming that they are not addictive in a bid to increase the number of consumers.

Statistics indicate that annually drug abuse in the world claims the life of 250,000 people. This calamitous phenomenon, in addition to grave economic consequences, has greatly imperiled the psychological health of societies.
