02.12.2009Training of teachers in Senovo

All teachers from “St. St. Cyril and Methodius” School of Senovo passed a training for work in multicultural environment and prevention of school dropout. The training took part on November 27 and 28 in Senovo, Rousse District. It was organized by Regional Pedagogical Center -  Rousse. Deyan Kolev from Center Amalipe was the trainer.
History of Roma in Bulgaria, inner group division within Roma community and its connections with the educational attitudes, specifics of Roma family and approaches for engaging Roma parents in the school process were the main topics discussed. The participants were getting acquainted also with successful practices for prevention of dropout rate.
“St. St. Cyril and Methodius” School of Senovo educates 150 students including 40 students from the former school of Krivnya village that was closed in the previous years.  Around 70 % of the students are Roma. Drop out of school rate is the biggest problem faced by their educational integration. Migration of Roma parents in Western European countries is the most frequent reason: parents often bring their children temporary in these countries and they drop out from school. Early marriages are another big problem that makes children (especially Roma girls) drop out. The teachers expressed their will to work for solving these problems but the traditional methods taught in universities appear ineffective. That is why they try implementing new tools and methods such as introducing “Folklore of the ethnoi – Roma folklore” subject in school curriculum, including Roma parents in the School Board of Trustees, organizing meetings with Roma who have gained successful professional realization, etc.
