08.04.20118th April – INTERNATIONAL DAY OF THE ROMA

 

This year also the Center for Interethnic Dialogue and Tolerance “Amalipe” organizes the International Day of the Roma. On 8th April /Friday/ in the building of Fifth Frame of the University of Veliko Tarnovo “St. Cyril and St. Methodius” at 11:00 o’clock, representatives of the Center “Amalipe”, together with Roma pupils and students, make an informational campaign on the occasion of the liberation of the Roma from the concentration camp Auschwitz in the end of the Second World War.

The campaign presents information through flyers and pictures for the killed Roma in the concentration camps during the Holocaust. The visitors will be able to see posters with pictures that captured the Roma life. The pictures are a product of the children from school “Hristo Smirnenski” in village Vodolei. The volunteers of the Center “Amalipe” will collect opinions and messages of the citizens concerning the colour of the Roma traditions and customs in Bulgaria.

Parallel with this, the holiday will be celebrated in the bookstore “Helikon” (17 “Vasil Levski” Str.). There, the Center “Amalipe” will exhibit pictures and essays of Roma students from the whole country. From 11:00 to 15:00 o’clock, every visitor will have the possibility to enjoy the children art and to reward the best in his or her opinion.  

The volunteers from the “Legal Clinic” at the University of Veliko Tarnovo “St. Cyril and St. Methodius” will take participation in the event.

The holiday will be organized and in the schools, participating in the project of the Center “Amalipe” for an educational integration “Decreasing the drop-out of school rate among Roma”, supported by the Foundation “America for Bulgaria”.

            On 8th April, in 1992, by the proposal of the Romano Union UN and the European Union, this day was declared for an International Day of the Roma.

            On this date, the liberation of the Roma from the concentration camp Auschwitz in the end of the Second World War, as well as the anniversary of the First International Congress of the Roma, held in 1971 in London are celebrated.
